"A belief in rebirth may be a subconscious recreation in the psyche of the timeless and universal myths of love, death, rebirth- the timeless myth of the death god (man) and the birth of another “life consuming life redeeming life creating” (Campbell- Primitive Mythology). This kind of belief was a necessary defense of our ancestors both against the fear of death and a world of natural phenomena mystifying and threatening. Man in the 20th century searches for greater relevance. Though science, religion, philosophy may be more sophisticated, the pervading sense today of lack of purpose in life- thus death- ultimate powerlessness- is our frontier."
Florence M. Hetzler (Philosophical Aspects of Thanatology Volume 1)
